In recent years, Thailand’s mobile data service sector has experienced rapid growth, with revenues
estimated to reach more than US$1.5 billion by 2015. At the heart of this exciting industry is Advanced Info Service (AIS), the number one mobile operator in Thailand with a 43 percent market share.
As the country’s leading mobile operator, AIS is committed to deliver uninterrupted service to its customers, even in the event of a utility outage. A subsidiary of AIS, Fax Lite Co. Ltd. owns and operates the Tellus Data Center which houses AIS’ mobile switching facilities. The data center was designed to comply with Tier 3 data center requirements to ensure minimal planned and unplanned downtime.
A complete power solution
Cummins provided 12 MW of reliable standby power for Tellus Data Center.
In order to support the high availability requirements, Fax Lite Co. Ltd needed to deploy reliable standby power that would ensure uninterrupted critical load in the event of an outage. Fax Lite Co. Ltd. considered several vendors based on the following criteria: cost competitiveness, product reliability and excellent customer support.
CPG was selected as the vendor of choice based on its capabilities in designing, integrating and commissioning dependable power systems. AIS purchased 12 units of Cummins generator sets in 2001 for mobile-switching facilities. In 2008, two more generator sets were installed, supplying 2000 kVA of standby power.
For this project, CPG supplied 12 MW of standby power with eight units of diesel-powered generator sets C1675 D5A, integrated with a PowerCommand® 3.3 control system and two units of PowerCommand Digital Master Control (DMC) 1000. Using common communications protocols, integrated microprocessor-based controls are utilised for system control and protection functions to enhance the reliability and performance of the Tellus Data Center.
The PowerCommand DMC 1000 paralleling system provides supervisory and transfer functions such as generator control and management, load management and sequence of operation control.
“The DMC 1000 paralleling system interfaces directly with the PowerCommand generator set controller to optimize system performance and simplify operation management. The two units ensured redundancy in the power system so that at any point in time, 6MVA of power is delivered by four generator sets,” explained
